COPE issues statement on inappropriate manipulation of peer review processes
The Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) has become aware of systematic, inappropriate attempts to manipulate the peer review processes of several journals across different publishers. These manipulations appear to have been orchestrated by a number of third party agencies offering services to authors. COPE has issued a statement after consultation with a variety of publishers.

Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation set to introduce new open access policy in January 2015
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is set to introduce an open access policy next month for the studies it funds that goes further than most other research funders. According to Trevor Mundel, the foundation’s president of global health, the policy will enable other researchers to access the latest evidence and draw on it to advance their own research to help tackle malnutrition, infectious diseases, and child and maternal mortality.

American Society of Hematology names Glenn Landis as Editorial Director of journal Blood
The American Society of Hematology (ASH) has announced that Glenn Landis will assume the position of Editorial Director of Blood, the journal of ASH, effective January 5, 2015. With more than 13 years of editorial experience at the Journal of Clinical Oncology (JCO), Landis brings extensive knowledge of the peer review process, technology infrastructure standards, and the medical journal community to his role at ASH.

FIZ Karlsruhe —Leibniz Institute for Information Infrastructure presents its completely revised information brochure ‘A Focus on Mathematics’. The publication is dedicated to new directions of integrated knowledge management in mathematics. Seven articles by expert authors, among them Prof. Gert-Martin Greuel, who is also editor-in-chief of zbMATH, span the bridge from the beginnings of the documentation of scientific results in the ‘Jahrbuch der Fortschritte der Mathematik’ (1868) to today’s mathematical online portal zbMATH.

IMS Health receives regulatory clearance for Cegedim transaction
Global information and technology services company IMS Health has announced that the company has received approval from the European Commission in connection with the pending acquisition of certain Cegedim information solutions and customer relationship management (CRM) businesses. In addition to the Commission’s approval, the waiting period for the U.S. antitrust review under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act (HSR) expired on December 5, 2014.
