USTR’s 2015 Special 301 Report highlights key IP issues, misses out on importance of copyright concerns in Canada
The Association of American Publishers (AAP) has applauded the release of the US Trade Representative (USTR) 2015 Special 301 Report, identifying many key copyright concerns and market-access barriers in U.S. trading partners. However, AAP is disappointed that the 2015 Report again fails to identify as a priority the harm caused to publishers and authors by Canada’s undefined ‘education’ as fair dealing exception.

Google to spend EUR150 million in Europe on grants for digital journalism experimentation
Amid increasing tensions with EU regulators and publishers, internet giant Google announced that it will spend EUR150 million ($164 million) in Europe on grants for digital journalism experimentation. The pledge is the latest attempt by Google to present a friendlier front in Europe, where it is confronting antitrust charges and has experienced harsh criticism from some publishers over its strategies.

Elsevier provides free online access to disaster and international health information in Nepal
STM publisher Elsevier is providing free access to its primary online clinical information tool, ClinicalKey, and to more than 90 publications through the NIH’s Emergency Access Initiative (EAI) to support the health and disaster professionals responding to the Nepal earthquake. Access to Elsevier’s ClinicalKey, at www.clinicalkey.com, will be IP-validated throughout Nepal for hospitals, institutional libraries and other healthcare entities supporting the disaster relief and recovery efforts, starting May 1, for four weeks.

Oxford University Press provides free online access to biomedical journals for healthcare professionals responding to earthquake in Nepal
Academic publisher Oxford University Press (OUP) is partnering with the National Library of Medicine (NLM) as they launch their Emergency Access Initiative (EAI) to provide free access to biomedical research for healthcare professionals and aid workers responding to the recent earthquake in Nepal. As part of this initiative, OUP will provide free access to over 532,000 articles from 71 journals, which will be freely available until May 23, 2015.

Future Science OA, the Gold (CC-BY) open access journal from Future Science Group, has announced its Article Processing Charge (APC) discounting options. Early Career Researchers, who are within the first 5 years of their career, will be eligible for a 50 percent discount on articles where they appear as the corresponding author.
