New study reveals characteristics of the ‘predatory’ scholarly publishing market
A study conducted by researchers from Hanken School of Economics and published in the open access journal BMC Medicine sheds new light on the volume and market characteristics of so-called ‘predatory’ scholarly journal publishing. The study shows the number of articles published in journals defined as such that have increased nearly eight fold since 2010. It concludes that the problem of ‘predatory journals’ is limited to a few countries where researchers are known to be placed under pressure to publish in international journals.

Elsevier launches new module in PharmaPendium
STM publisher Elsevier has announced the launch of a new module in PharmaPendium, its fully searchable database of drug approval documents and extracted data to inform critical drug development decisions. The PharmaPendium Efficacy Module features over 1.4 million extracted efficacy observations from FDA and EMA drug approval packages, providing insights to researchers to support clinical development decisions and clinical trial design.

Wiley announces retirement of Chairman Peter Booth Wiley
Publisher John Wiley & Sons, Inc. has announced that its Board of Directors has elected Matthew S. Kissner to succeed Peter Booth Wiley as Chairman of the Board. Wiley was elected to another term as Director. Wiley, who joined the Board in 1984 and succeeded his brother Bradford Wiley II as Chairman in 2002, publicly declared his intention to retire on December 22, 2014.

Overleaf, an academic authorship tool, has announced that the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) has integrated the Overleaf online LaTeX and rich text collaborative writing and publishing tool into IEEE CollabratecTM, the new IEEE professional networking and collaboration platform. IEEE, a global organisation with more than 426,000 members around the world, launched IEEE Collabratec earlier this month.

Publons, the world’s leading peer review recognition platform, and Cambridge University Press have entered into a partnership to give credit to peer reviewers for four Cambridge journals. Canadian Science Publishing acquires three journals from the Agricultural Institute of Canada
Canadian Science Publishing (CSP), an independent, not-for-profit scholarly publisher, and the Agricultural Institute of Canada (AIC), a not-for-profit institute dedicated to broadening society’s knowledge and use of science and agriculture, have reached an agreement for CSP to acquire three journals. This acquisition is effective immediately with CSP taking over production, management, and subscription sales for the remainder of 2015 and onward.

The Optical Society (OSA) has implemented a technology solution that effectively supports US federal agency public access requirements and helps authors comply with governmental mandates to make their federally funded articles publicly available after a 12-month embargo. By partnering with CHORUS (Clearinghouse for the Open Research of the United States), OSA enables an option for readers and agencies to easily discover federally funded articles published by OSA and to then access the full-text of these articles directly on OSA’s platform, OSA Publishing.
