Investing in academic excellence does lead to research impact, says new HEFCE report
A report for the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) by Digital Science reveals that the scholarly significance of research underpins its societal impact. The report titled ‘Publication patterns in research underpinning impact in REF 2014‘ is the first report to analyse all research publications submitted for research assessment between 1988 and 2014. The study found that at least 42 per cent of the research cited in impact case studies in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF2014) had been submitted as research outputs to the various prior research assessments.

SAGE Publishing reports continued strong growth in 2016 release of Journal Citation Reports
Academic publisher SAGE Publishing reported continued strong performance and growth across its journals portfolio in the Journal Citation Reports (Source: 2015 Web of Science Data). With 548 journals now ranked in the JCR, SAGE continues to experience consistent growth within the reports, achieving a 42% increase over the past five years. In this year’s reports, over 100 SAGE journals have received a top 10 category rank, with 5 journals receiving their first Impact Factor (IF).

Springer Nature and Tsinghua University Press present the third Nano Research Award
Peidong Yang, the S.K. and Angela Chan Distinguished Professor of Energy and Professor of Chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley, and a faculty scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, has received the third Tsinghua University PressSpringer Nano Research Award. The award is accompanied by a cash prize of US $10,000. The award ceremony was held during the 2016 Sino-US Symposium on Nanoscale Science and Technology on June 20, in Nanjing, China.

NISO Open Discovery Initiative Update presented at 2016 ALA Annual Conference
The NISO Open Discovery Initiative Update took place on June 27 during the 2016 ALA Annual Conference. The session was co-sponsored by ALCTS, the Library and Information Technology Association, and the National Information Standards Organization (NISO). Ken Varnum, Senior Program Manager, University of Michigan Library, introduced the goals of the presentation to provide an update on recent activities of the Open Discovery Initiative (ODI).
