ORCID and Canadian Research Knowledge Network, in association with 16 Canadian stakeholders collaborate to build ORCID-CA, the ORCID consortium in Canada

ORCID and the Canadian Research Knowledge Network (CRKN), with support from a working group of 16 Canadian stakeholders who are all deeply committed to supporting research, scholarship, and innovation in Canada, are collaborating to build ORCID-CA, the ORCID consortium in Canada. Together, the working group created a Joint Statement of Principles which describes the benefits of ORCID and an ORCID consortium in Canada, and confirms their commitment to encourage and support the use of ORCID across the research ecosystem.

VSNU and Oxford University Press unable to reach new agreement for access to academic journals

The universities in the Netherlands and Oxford University Press (OUP) have been unable to reach a new agreement for access to academic journals. The key priority in the negotiations for VSNU (the Association of Universities in the Netherlands) was facilitating the transition to open access – freely accessible articles – without Dutch scholars having to pay double to make them available in this way.

PubMed to include authors’ conflict-of-interest statements and link them to abstracts

PubMed, the leading database of abstracts from medical and life science journals, will reportedly include authors’ conflict-of-interest statements and link them to abstracts so they are accessible on search pages. PubMed’s new policy comes over a year after a group of scientists, physicians, organisations, and a handful of US senators sent a letter to the NLM and the National Institutes of Health asking them to publish the disclosers.

BMJ appoints Mark Davies as new Non-Executive Director

Healthcare knowledge provider BMJ has announced the appointment of a new non-executive director to the company’s board. Mark Davies has been a GP in West Yorkshire for over 20 years. He also held a number of clinical leadership roles at the Department of Health, Cabinet Office and, most recently, was executive medical director of the Health and Social Care Information Centre.

Educational publishers from around the world showed delegates at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) how copyright has enabled them to invest in the digital technology that is shaping the future of school-age learning. Invited by the International Publishers Association (IPA), the Federation of European Publishers (FEP) and Bertelsmann, the four publishers came from Brazil, Mexico, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates.
