Publishers require authors to use an ORCID identifier during the publication process
A group of seven publishers have announced, during 2016, they will begin requiring authors to use an ORCID identifier (iD) during the publication process. The American Geophysical Union (AGU), eLife, EMBO, Hindawi, the Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and the Public Library of Science (PLOS) will join the Royal Society – which already (as of January 1, 2016) requires its authors to include iDs at submission – in making this commitment.

Elsevier announces inaugural issue of new open access journal – Contemporary Clinical Trials Communications
STM publisher Elsevier has announced the first issue of its new open access journal – Contemporary Clinical Trials Communications. The issue features a new method to make cancer clinical trials more effective, a better way of determining whether a trial was successful and a dashboard that helps patients enroll in trials. The journal is a spin-off of the well-established title Contemporary Clinical Trials.

NISO receives two grants to undertake creation of a framework on data and privacy
The National Information Standards Organization (NISO) has received two grants to develop a consensus framework for mitigating and managing the privacy risks related to the collection, preservation, sharing, use, and re-use of research data sets. The grants from both the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation will further advance NISO’s existing privacy initiatives on user privacy in library, publisher, and software supplier systems, details of which were published in December 2015.
