Global publishers select Scope’s ConSCIse solution to enhance book discovery, develop abstracts and keywords for book chapters
Scope e-Knowledge Center (Scope), a leading provider of knowledge services and a Quatrro Global Services company, has announced that more than fifteen major book publishers have now developed enriched chapter level metadata by leveraging Scope’s ConSCIse solution. The need for enhanced book chapter metadata was reinforced in a white paper from PCG, an Ingenta Company, noting that book publishers are increasingly adopting the journal publishing model for displaying search results for book content by delivering enhanced metadata for the book chapter along with journal articles.

Leading US copyright experts to debate ‘Fair Use’ at Charles Clark Memorial Lecture
Delegates at The London Book Fair will in 2017 hear two eminent copyright law specialists debate one of the most controversial areas of international copyright law – the doctrine of Fair Use. Judge Pierre Leval of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, has been a major architect of the Fair Use doctrine in the United States, most recently as the author of the Google Books decisions. Intellectual property lawyer and former General Counsel for the US Copyright Office Jon Baumgarten has litigated precedent setting Fair Use cases and advocates a more narrow interpretation of the doctrine as applied in those cases.

Initial outcomes of the COAR Next Generation Repositories Working Group now open for public comments
The Confederation of Open Access Repositories (COAR) has announced the publication of the initial outcomes of the COAR Next Generation Repositories Working Group for public comment. In April 2016, COAR launched a working group to help identify new functionalities and technologies for repositories and develop a road map for their adoption. For the past several months, the group has been working to define a vision for repositories and sketch out the priority user stories and scenarios that will help guide the development of new functionalities.

Scientific writing and publishing tools provider Overleaf has announced that Purdue University will continue in a five year partnership after a successful year-long pilot. During the pilot, premium Overleaf accounts and customized writing templates were provided to all students, faculty and staff. Elsevier in deal to provide University Office CRIS system IRMA access to Scopus data
University Office, an international leader in research management and administration applications and solutions, and STM publisher Elsevier have announced an agreement to provide the University Office CRIS system IRMA (Integrated Research Management Application) with access to data from Elsevier’s Scopus, the largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature. Media and publishing intelligence firm Simba Information has released a report, STM Online Services 2016-2020, according to which, online services continue to be the fastest growing of all content delivery segments, faster than journals and much faster than books. Before elimination of trading between publishers, STM online services are estimated to have grown 3.6% to $5.8 billion in 2016, and are expected to deliver a similar pace of growth annually to 2020.

Education publishers sue Amazon marketplace vendors over counterfeit sales
Education publishers Pearson Education, Cengage Learning and McGraw Hill have summoned Amazon to disclose the names and financial accounts of online vendors allegedly selling low-cost pirated copies of the publishers’ books via the Amazon marketplace site. According to a report in the Financial Times, the publishers are suing 100 unnamed Amazon marketplace sellers for copyright infringement, accusing the sellers of ‘hiding behind the anonymity of internet pseudonyms’.
