A £1m project to digitise more than 15 million pages of 19th century medical texts has been completed and the material is now available online for free. Covering much more than just medical sciences, this enormous library of text and images encompasses consumer health, sport and fitness, diet and nutrition, along with some weird and wonderful historical medical practices such as phrenology and hydrotherapy.

PubMed, the leading database of abstracts from medical and life science journals, will reportedly include authors’ conflict-of-interest statements and link them to abstracts so they are accessible on search pages. PubMed’s new policy comes over a year after a group of scientists, physicians, organisations, and a handful of US senators sent a letter to the NLM and the National Institutes of Health asking them to publish the disclosers.

Society for Scholarly Publishing to pilot new Mentorship Program

The Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP) will pilot a new Mentorship Program starting in June 2017. The SSP Career Development Committee is seeking up to 12 mentors and up to 12 mentees to participate in this new program and provide feedback. The pilot will run from June through November 2017 and SSP is accepting applications through May 15.

New BioMed Central and Digital Science report looks to the future of peer review

Open access publisher BioMed Central and Digital Science have announced a new report, according to which, in order to affect real, industry-wide improvements to the peer review process, publishers, researchers, funders and institutions need to be willing to experiment with different models, encourage more diversity in the reviewer pool, utilize Artificial Intelligence (AI) and support training and mentoring for peer reviewers. The report ‘What might peer review look like in 2030?’ is based on the lively and progressive sessions at the SpotOn London conference held at Wellcome Collection Conference centre in November 2016.

USTR’s Special 301 Report, addresses China, Russia, and India, and urges Canada to revise its fair-dealing provisions

The Association of American Publishers (AAP) has welcomed the release of the Special 301 Report by the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR). The Report identifies significant copyright concerns and market-access barriers facing U.S. rights holders in key markets and highlights particular issues in Canada. The Report is a critical tool for lawmakers to help remove barriers that impede the ability of U.S. copyright owners to compete in foreign markets.

Elsevier has announced a three-year collaboration with the Thai-Journal Citation Index (TCI) Centre and Thailand Research Fund (TRF). UC Libraries acquire STMnetBASE frontlist ebook collection from CRC Press/Taylor & Francis for next three years, 2017 – 2019

The UC Libraries have acquired the STMnetBASE frontlist ebook collection from CRC Press/Taylor & Francis for the next three years, 2017 – 2019. All ten campuses and CDL contributed towards this purchase. The agreement includes 16 new collections and replaces the previous licensing of individual subject collections.

The American Library Association announced Beth Nawalinski as the new executive director of United for Libraries, effective July 31, 2017. Nawalinski currently serves as deputy executive director of United for Libraries. Following a nationwide search, Nawalinski will fill the position being vacated by the retirement of Sally Reed.
