Universidade do Porto, the largest university in Portugal, has found great success with the implementation of EBSCO Discovery ServiceTM (EDS) from EBSCO Information Services (EBSCO). The university purchased EDS in 2011 after looking at several different services. Researchers can now explore early European history and culture as it happened with ProQuest’s release of the first 2 million pages in its massive digitization project with Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF) in Paris. When complete, the project will give researchers cover to cover access to more than 28,000 rare European books printed from 1400 to 1700 – 10 million pages – in crisp, fully searchable images. The Association of Southeastern Research Libraries (ASERL) has announced that the National Agricultural Library (NAL) has become ASERL’s first-ever Program Affiliate. Through this agreement, NAL will partner with ASERL libraries to retain important agriculture-related print journals as part of ASERL’s ‘Scholars Trust’ program, and NAL will use the ‘JRNL’ software tool to manage these holdings and make them discoverable to other program partners. Open access journal PeerJ, which began publishing on February 12, 2013, has published 760 articles, and over 1,000 PrePrints across all of the life sciences and medicine, culminating in the work of over 4,000 authors. PeerJ is not only celebrating its two-year anniversary of PeerJ publishing articles in the life sciences and medicine, but also the opening of peer-reviewed article submissions to PeerJ’s newly announced journal PeerJ Computer Science. NASA has announced its plan for a policy ensuring public access to articles and data resulting from the approximately $3 billion it invests annually in basic and applied research, as required by the February 2013 White House directive. NASA has provided a detailed timeline for the final policy to be fully developed, and is slating October 2015 as the goal for full implementation to begin.
