 Wiley in deal to acquire Zyante Inc.
John Wiley & Sons, Inc. has signed an agreement to acquire Zyante Inc., a leading provider of computer science and STEM education courseware. Under the terms of the agreement, which will close on July 1, 2019, Zyante shareholders will receive $56 million in cash. Zyante was founded in 2012 and its zyBooks platform has served over 500,000 students across 500 institutions.

 IOP Publishing initiates open data trial
IOP Publishing is trialing a new data policy on three of its journals to encourage and support authors to make the data underpinning their article more accessible. The trial will begin in July on the journals Environmental Research Letters, Journal of Physics: Complexity, and Machine Learning: Science and Technology, and will be extended to five additional IOP Publishing journals after three months.

 Academies call for a sustainable European data governance approach
ALLEA, the European Federation of Academies of Sciences and Humanities, and the Royal Society have jointly published a discussion paper on Flourishing in a data-enabled society (PDF). Based on the outcomes of discussions during an ALLEA/Royal Society conference in November 2018, the paper calls for a coordinated approach across disciplines and sectors to ensure data and digital technologies support human flourishing.

 UKRI signs San Francisco Declaration of Research Assessment
UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) has signed an international declaration aimed at strengthening and promoting best practice in the way research is assessed. The San Francisco Declaration of Research Assessment (DORA) recognises the need to improve the ways in which the outputs of research are evaluated with regards to appropriate use of metrics and makes high-level recommendations for how this can be achieved. DORA includes specific recommendations for funders and organisations that undertake evaluation.

 Melanie Keen appointed Director of Wellcome Collection
Wellcome has announced that Melanie Keen, currently Director and Chief Curator of Iniva (the Institute of International Visual Arts), has been appointed Director of Wellcome Collection, the free museum and library for the incurably curious in London, UK. She will take up the role in autumn 2019.
