The members of HathiTrust have elected four library directors to serve on its Board of Governors beginning in 2017. Kevin L. Smith, Dean of Libraries at the University of Kansas, and Sarah E. Thomas, Vice President for the Harvard Library and University Librarian, Harvard University, will serve three-year terms ending in December 2019. Beth McNeil, Dean of Libraries at Iowa State University, has been reelected to the Board of Governors to a term that will conclude in December 2018. Joseph P. Lucia, Dean of Libraries at Temple University, will serve a one-year term concluding in December 2017.

Mary M. Case begins one-year term as president of the Association of Research Libraries
Mary M. Case, university librarian and dean of libraries at University of Illinois at Chicago, began a one-year term as president of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) on September 28, 2016, during the Association’s Fall 2016 Meeting in Washington, DC. Case succeeds Larry Alford, chief librarian at University of Toronto, as ARL president. Alford continues to serve as a member of both the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee as past president.

The world bodies speaking for the publishing and library sectors, the International Publishers Association (IPA)and the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), have pledged to find mechanisms for universal access to information, and to help national and international authorities to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals linked to literacy, education and reading. In a joint statement, the first UNESCO International Day for Universal Access to Information, the IPA and the IFLA declare that access to information should be universal.
