Arizona State University’s (ASU) Center for Science and the Imagination is bringing together a team of science fiction authors, scholars, digital publishers, journalists, and technologists to write a book on the fly in 72 hours at the 2016 Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP) Annual Meeting. Using a suite of collaborative technologies, participants will quickly write, edit, assemble and publish a multimedia anthology exploring publishing topics through a series of “sprints” that take place in real time at the meeting.

The National Information Standards Organization (NISO) is seeking comments on three draft documents related to Altmetrics: NISO RP-25-201x-2A, Alternative Outputs in Scholarly Communications: Data Metrics; NISO RP-25-201x-2B, Persistent Identifiers in Scholarly Communications; and NISO RP-25-201x-2C, Alternative Outputs in Scholarly Communications. American College of Physicians names new EVP & CEO
The American College of Physicians (ACP) has appointed Darilyn V. Moyer to the organisation’s next Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer. STM publisher Elsevier has announced the launch of the International Journal of Surgery Protocols (IJS Protocols), an open access journal covering all areas of surgery. The journal will be the first in the surgical field to accept research protocols and related articles and correspondence for publication. The journal is accepting submissions from May 2016 onwards and will begin publishing articles in June 2016.

Over twenty publishers now use HighWire’s Impact Vizor for faster, easier ‘evidenced-based’ publishing insights
HighWire Press, Inc., the publishing technology platform provider for renowned scholarly publishers and societies, has announced that twenty-one publishers now use Impact Vizor, a suite of interactive, visualised analytics viewers which launched in August 2015. Impact Vizor was an ALPSP 2015 Award for Innovation in Publishing finalist. Today publishers use the seven dashboards in Impact Vizor to visualise, analyse and compare editorial programs for rapid insights. HighWire developed the tools with critical input from several publishers.

Two winning projects from this year’s national BMJ Awards have included important input from Plymouth University Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry (PUPSMD). HathiTrust Research Center opens doors to text mining scholars
The HathiTrust Research Center (HTRC), a cooperative service of Indiana University, University of Illinois, and HathiTrust, has expanded its services to support computational research on the entire collection of one of the world’s largest digital libraries, held by HathiTrust. HathiTrust’s collections include over 14 million digitized volumes, including more than 7 million books, more than 725,000 US federal government documents, and more than 350,000 serial publications.

CrossRef to enable registration for preprints
CrossRef, a not-for-profit association of worldwide scholarly publishers, will enable registration for preprints by August 2016. Crossref’s original registration policy prevented its members from registering content and assigning Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) to ‘duplicative works.’ The new policy means that preprints will have separate DOIs from any later versions that may be registered, according to an announcement from the organisation.
