The Optical Society (OSA) has announced that its members have elected Dr. Satoshi Kawata, professor emeritus of Osaka University and honorary scientist at RIKEN, both in Japan, as the society’s 2020 Vice President. Two directors-at-large were also chosen during this year’s election: Dr. Polina Bayvel, University of London, U.K., and Dr. Gerd Leuchs, Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light, Germany. The announcement was made during OSA’s Annual Business Meeting at the 2019 Frontiers in Optics + Laser Science (FiO + LS) conference held September 15-19 in Washington, D.C., U.S.A. Jisc has announced a new appointment to its leadership team – Karen Foster. Karen will lead a new data analytics directorate as executive director, effective September 17. Karen joins Jisc from the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA), with 22 members of her team. Jisc and HESA have a long-standing and successful relationship and the new directorate will build on existing services such as Heidi Plus and Community Dashboards to deliver business intelligence for HE providers, the public sector and charities.
