Elsevier launches new OA, peer-reviewed journal serving the international otolaryngology community
STM publisher Elsevier has announced the launch of Otolaryngology Case Reports, a new open access journal publishing case reports in all areas of adult and pediatric otolaryngology. This peer-reviewed, online-only companion journal to the prestigious American Journal of Otolaryngology is now accepting submissions and is scheduled to begin publication of issues in early 2017.

American Geophysical Union expresses concern for scientific integrity and free communication of scientific information to the public at federal agencies
The American Geophysical Union (AGU) wrote to federal agency heads on January 26, expressing concern over recent reports about violations of scientific integrity and interference with public access to and communication of scientific information. In the letter, AGU has called on the agencies, and the administration, to reverse policies that threaten scientific integrity and open communication as soon as possible and urges that they not be reinstated.

Virginia Steel, the Norman and Armena Powell University Librarian at UCLA, has been elected to the position of Chair of the SPARC Steering Committee. Steel has served as member of the Committee, which provides strategic advice and guidance to the SPARC staff, since 2015. Steel brings a unique perspective to the Chair position, informed by working with a variety of libraries ranging from Massachusetts Institute of Technology to Washington State University to the University of California at Santa Cruz.

EBSCO Information Services (EBSCO) has renewed its commitment to helping libraries ‘go green’ by bringing back an expanded version of its EBSCO Solar grant program for 2017. As part of the EBSCO Solar initiative, EBSCO is currently soliciting grant applications to help libraries fund solar installations. EBSCO is making two $100,000 grants available to bidders that will allow the winning libraries to reduce their utilities expenditures and install a solar array at their institution.

Over a million records of open access publications from Latin America are now discoverable through theOpenAIRE platform. In December 2016, OpenAIRE began harvesting records from LA Referencia, the large regional repository network that aggregates metadata of open access publications. Usage statistics for Pilot and Round 2 e-books now available
Knowledge Unlatched, a not-for- profit company based in England, has revealed the first download figures for KU Round 2 titles that have been unlatched so far. In Round 2, 78 new Humanities and Social Sciences e-books from 26 publishers were made Open Access through the support of both individual libraries and library consortia from across the globe. These books are available on the OAPEN and HathiTrust platforms for anyone to download as PDFs on Creative Commons licenses.
